I was showing off my iPod nano (won at the Simile ISWC 2005 semantic bank competition) at the Cork geek bloggers’ dinner recently: just got iDoom working yesterday (thanks for the link to it Brendan!) and was watching videos on it today after installing the latest kernel from iPodLinux. The video functionality is pretty nifty (but requires large AVI files because it is uncompressed); was playing the Superman Returns teaser trailer and the latest episode of the Simpsons (very watchable).
However, I have my first iPod nano screen scratch; I popped the nano out of its protective Jelly Belly box and was less than happy to see a small mark right in the middle of the screen. Hopefully the shop will take it back (I managed to retrieve the receipt, thanks Brian!).
The UK satellite TV station Rapture is due to return today. Of interest to us anime fans is that they plan to show 2 and a half hours of anime each week (two series AFAIK).

Watched Shaun of the Dead on Hallowe’en night. It was great fun
TG4 showed their Irish language of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on Monday; I was going to tape it but my TV reception wasn’t great…
Two strange stories that caught my eye from the entertainment world:
Nicholas Cage has named his new son Kal-El Coppola Cage. This is from the actor who was lined up by Tim Burton to play Superman some years back…
Ian McKellen, who has already starred in Coronation Street, is interested in playing a long lost relative of the Dingles in Emmerdale [Farm].
Watched the season premiere of Smallville’s fifth season at the weekend. It was so good, I watched it twice. Don’t want to spoil anything for fans of the show, so if you need to you can read more at The Kryptonian’s forum thread below.
TK Forums - Season 5, Episode 1 “Arrival” talkback
Watched the first episode of the new series of Battlestar Galactica, which premiered on Sci-Fi US at 10 PM last night. Without spoiling anything, it was very good; after an intense first season, you wondered if they could keep up the pace for the second season: and they have.
After that, we popped along to A Clean Well-Lighted Place for Books for the midnight launch of the latest in the Harry Potter series, “The Half-Blood Prince”. At 12:01, the boxes of books were broken out, and the teenagers went wild. The salespeople said that they had 500 copies of the book, and there was quite a big crowd there so I’d imagine that most of them were sold. I can only imagine how mad (crazy) it must have been at one of the mainstream booksellers like Borders or Barnes & Noble.
Had a busy day yesterday, because we also drove to Napa, visited the Francis Coppola, Ehlers and Beringers (briefly) vineyards, and saw the Old Faithful Geyser do its thing. Some photos are here.
So the latest Doctor Who series has come to an end, for those who haven’t watched it yet you should probably not click on the “more” link below as it contains spoilers. I can say that it was good!
But before I get on to that, I also watched the Smallville finale on E4 last night (again).

Well as you may have heard, Star Trek: Enterprise has been cancelled, and here’s the plan for the finale:
‘Enterprise’ to Segue to ‘Generation’ in Final Episode
UPN has announced the voyage of Star Trek: Enterprise will come to an end on May 13 with two back-to-back episodes, “Terra Prime” and “These Are the Voyages.” A news release by the network said that “These Are the Voyages” will take place six years following “Terra Prime.” In it, “an emotional Captain Archer [Scott Bakula] and the crew return to Earth to face the decommission of Enterprise and signing of the Federation charter, ratifying the newly-formed alliance of planets they helped forge. Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Jonathan Frakes guest stars as Riker and Marina Sirtis guest stars as Troi in this special series finale.”
