Blogging and DJing: Perhaps I Shouldn’t Multitask…

Those of you who know me may have heard I do a radio show on our college radio station (Flirt FM). I’m on now actually, 9 to 11 PM, blogging and DJing at the same time - but I can’t multitask very well, so while I type, things could go very, very wrong (dead air is a no-no). [Oh shoot, I've just seen a mouse in the studio corridor, at least I hope it was a mouse... /me tucks in trouser legs into socks and runs...]

Gareth Stack Explains Bebo, and Very Well Too!

In my NewsTalk 106 interview today, I referenced psychology student Gareth Stack’s excellent article on Bebo for tuppenceworth.ie, where he compared the browsing and location of friends on the site to slot machine gambling. I thought it was a great quote, so had to mention it.

And Another Interview for NewsTalk 106

I followed up my previous media appearances this past week with a more serious interview about the advantages and disadvantages of social networks (and Bebo in particular) for “Lunchtime with Brendan O’Brien” on NewsTalk 106.

You can also download an MP3 of this interview here.

This topic has received such coverage this week there must be an increase in the pocket jingling noises in Bebo’s San Francisco HQ… Mark Tighe was interviewed on Dave Fanning’s Monday show, and our director of Computer Services Kieran Loftus was on Today FM’s The Last Word with Matt Cooper the same day. I also got a call from 2FM on Monday asking some questions about social networking - crazy!

Interviewed for Spin 1038 / Daily Mail Ireland Copy, Paste and Edit

Following on from the Sunday Times article about Bebo and various colleges blocking the site, I was interviewed for about 5 minutes by Jack and Ali on Dublin’s Spin 1038 at 1:10 PM today.

You can hear the clip from the show here.

Related to this is the fact that the Sunday Times article appeared in Monday’s Daily Mail Ireland, re-written by someone called Enda Feeney. From what I could see (apart from one extra bit tagged on near the end), it was almost entirely lifted from Mark Tighe’s Sunday Times article the previous day. Perhaps this plagiarism (or is there a special industry term for this I don’t know about?) explains why the tabloid is only 30 cents…

Edit: Mark talks about this and other stuff on his new blog RoboHack.

Last Month I’ve Been Mostly Listening to…

Didn’t get to tune into a whole lot of radio last month, but it was great to hear “Here Comes the Night for One Night Only” on Today FM the last day of February - bring DD back before midnight!

Apart from that, listened to quite a bit of NPR Worldwide and WRN Europe, acting as audio newspapers for me in bed!

Pay Per Podcast (Ricky Gervais)

I heard recently that Guardian Unlimited | Ricky Gervais | Ricky Gervais podcast will soon become a paid download.

Nick Mailer, web host for the Ricky Gervais podcast: “podcasts are to radio what blogs are to newspapers”.

There was a story on Sky News a week-and-a-half ago (which was shown on Five News the week before that) about the Ricky Gervais podcast becoming the most popular podcast so far, and thereby entering the Guinness book of records. On the story, the podcast show’s producer Karl Pilkington was “joking” that they should charge £1 per podcast downloaded. Seems it wasn’t a joke after all…

Many others (trackbacked) seem to disagree with this move, and won’t the paid podcasts end up on BitTorrent eventually anyway?

boards.ie on the Radio Again (RTE’s “The Business”)

boards.ie got its second mention on RTE Radio 1 last week; this time on Saturday’s “The Business” in a segment about broadband in Ireland.

You can hear the audio snippet of this show.

Ambient Zone Podcasts

I’ve created a podcasts section on my Ambient Zone site.

I hope to add many podcasts there from the electronica show on Galway’s Flirt FM. As I don’t know yet how to make the site “podsafe”, I’ve decided to try and only use freely-available music (i.e. royalty free) on shows that will be made public in this podcasts section.

To start off with, I’m doing a special featuring music from the online record label (or “netlabel”) Monotonik. Enjoy!

boards.ie Mentioned on RTE Radio 1’s Today with Pat Kenny (Irish Psychics Live)

Got a phone call to say that boards.ie was mentioned on RTE Radio 1’s Today with Pat Kenny in relation to a discussion about Irish Psychics Live on our forums (Pat did an ‘exposé’ about them the previous Friday). Was funny to hear Pat reading out some comments from members of our site…

Pat, if by some chance you’re reading this, I have to confess that I’m not you’re biggest fan; in fact, I’d go so far as to say that I hate your TV show interviews - but I really enjoyed hearing you laying in to the Irish Psychics Live guy and debunking his ’service’ last week. The Irish Skeptics Society are proud of you too!

(Here’s an audio snippet of today’s show. Link to the discussion thread in question.)

boards.ie Podcasts Go Live

Over the weekend we’ve had two channels added to the new boards.ie Podcasts area: the Entertainment Review and the Current Affairs Review. Enjoy!
