…for the past few months, hence the lack of regular blog entries. Most of my summer has been taken up with proposal writing for research funding here at DERI, the first of which finished up around the end of the June and the second ran from then until the end of August, so unfortunately I haven’t had time for much else…
Anyway, here are some updates about future social media / social software activities I’m involved in:
I’ve acquired socialmedia.net (and socialsoftware.net). I’m planning to run a social media news and views site there along the lines of R/W Web or Mashable. Suggestions welcome…
social.ie is in testing phase; we’re just migrating some functionality from boards.ie (friends, blogs, and soon albums), and then we can start adding new stuff.
Thomas, Tom and I are organising BlogTalk 2008, the international social software conference, which will be held in Cork in six months time. More about this soon.
It’s teaching time again; my course on Emerging Web Media to the Masters in Digital Media starts again tomorrow. Our Moodle is currently offline but you can see my previous notes on SlideShare.
I’ll be on a discussion panel next week at an event about “Social Networking in Games” in the Digital Hub. I’ll blog more about this shortly. I had hoped to attend Mashup Camp on the same day, but the date has been moved.
An interesting comment by NUI Galway President Iggy Ó Muircheartaigh at last week’s graduation (in reference to Enya’s music for the Lord of the Rings): he said that JRR Tolkien was an external examiner for the University in the 1950s.
Conn gave a great talk and question / answer session at DERI, NUI Galway this morning about podcasting and his experiences producing both “An tImeall” and “An Líonra Sóisialta”.
My Digital Media students recorded a video of his talk - due to some upcoming exams, it will probably be about two weeks before they can edit / upload a video podcast of the event. Conn also captured an audio recording of the talk, so maybe there can be an upload race
A great day by my account at least (and by some others that I overheard!) was had at the WebCamp workshop on social networks held at DERI, NUI Galway yesterday.
Considering the short notice of just nine days, there was an impressive turnout of between 50 and 60 people, and as well as six talks in the morning we had some interesting “birds of a feather” discussion sessions in the afternoon.
All presentations from the day are available at SlideShare. We hope to publish some of the day’s videos to YouTube during the next week. Thanks to Conor and Uldis for their help with organising the event, and to Ina for recording the videos.
DM110 Emerging Web Media is a module that I teach to the Masters in Digital Media course at the Huston Film School, National University of Ireland, Galway. Yesterday, I was talking about social network theory (in brief) and online social network services (SNS). You can view the slides below.
Edit: I’ve also uploaded the previous lectures as Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3
A reminder that the first Drupal Ireland meetup occurs in DERI (map) this Saturday. If you’re interested in taking part, you can signup for the planning wiki at groups.drupal.org.
