DM110 - Week 4 - Social Networks

DM110 Emerging Web Media is a module that I teach to the Masters in Digital Media course at the Huston Film School, National University of Ireland, Galway. Yesterday, I was talking about social network theory (in brief) and online social network services (SNS). You can view the slides below.

Edit: I’ve also uploaded the previous lectures as Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3

Guest blogging on the Irish Internet Association blog

I’ll be a guest blogger on the IIA’s blog for the first two weeks in February, where I’ll be talking about Web 2.0 and emerging web media platforms such as semantic blogging, wikis and social network services. Looking forward to generating some interesting comments and questions…

6000+ Irish Blog Awards nominations…

Wow, was reading on ENN that there have been 6000+ nominations for this year’s IBAs. Pity I won’t be able to make it, but either Tom or Gerry will be giving the boards.ie-sponsored prize on the night. (Oi, Damien, time to close down the nominations system!)

RIP.ie - Death Notices Ireland

“RIP.ie is an information and services website dealing with all end of life matters in Ireland.”

I was talking to the founder on this site on Skype last month; it’s a very useful resource for anyone who has suffered a bereavement, and provides one of the (if not THE) largest listings of death notices in the country.

Most common RDF namespaces…

…according to data collected by Swoogle for PTSW. See here for an Excel download and a visualisation of this data is available here. (SIOC comes in at #41.)

In MIT / Cambridge on 1st-3rd March

I’ll be visiting Cambridge, USA at the beginning of March to be part of this year’s MIT Technology and Entrepreneurship IT panel (see last year’s site).

Hopefully I might get to meet up with some local Semantic Web people and talk about SIOC or other projects; if you’re there and free on the 1st or the 3rd of March, let me know.

The next addition to the Boards Group will be boards.tv, deviating a bit from my previous set of country-specific sites to offer a general forum for worldwide television discussion. I’m still setting this up but you can certainly login (reusing your boards.us account if you had one) and test out the forums… Enjoy!

(Via DRI) For European Data Protection Day next Sunday, five ways to protect your privacy

Related to my previous post on cyberstalking and protecting yourself online (BTW thanks for the feedback Red Mum), there are some interesting tips via DRI about how to protect your privacy: (1) stop SMS spam; (2) e-mail the Minister for Justice and request him to stop spying on all Irish individuals; (3) stop getting junk mail; (4) make a personal information request; (5) donate to Digital Rights Ireland.
