A farewell message to Ina O’Murchu, who is finishing her MSc degree scholarship today at DERI’s Semantic Web Cluster (in the Social Software Subcluster). I was co-supervisor (with Stefan Decker) for Ina’s masters project on augmenting local communities online with semantic technologies.
Ina, as well as being immortalised through your publication record, you also found some small fame in my semantic desktop animation for TechCamp last year, a snippet of which is shown below in tribute

Ina, I hope you’ve enjoyed and benefited from the past few years in DERI, and I wish you all the best with your future career.
Edit: Some photos!

I’ve been listening to music from the new Lax EP by wonderful artist Esa Ruoho, also known as Lackluster. It is highly recommended and available to download from:
digilog.gr (net)label | diginet002
Here’s a blurb from their site:
Finnish born and bred electronic music composer Esa Ruoho, better known as lackluster, offers digilog a collection of seven lush & melodic summer tracks. Heart-yearning melodies, crisp percussion and beautifully arranged soundscapes create an ep that oozes warmth and fragility. Just sit back, relax and enjoy those 30 minutes of aural bliss..
I blogged yesterday about testing the Slingbox; today I saw the TiVo in operation via the Slingbox - even cooler! Not only can you watch your live TV, but you can set stuff to record and watch it later. Screenshots below, showing the TiVo remote control via a Slingbox (that’s Tim Robbins waving a shotgun at Tom Cruise on HBO) and the “Now Playing List”.

NOXON iRadio :: TerraTec Electronic GmbH :: clever gear for a smart world
I saw this reviewed in Galway Now magazine, it’s a device for listening to internet radio stations via your broadband / wireless at home. The NOXON iRadio also has a built-in speaker, and doesn’t require a PC to operate. Neato!
Sling Media
A friend of mine has a Slingbox in New York, and he’s been showing me it in operation. Here is a screenshot of the news / sports program from 15 minutes ago.

For those who don’t know what a Slingbox is, it’s basically a network-enabled device that allows you to watch your cable TV / satellite / DVR / whatever from home wherever you are over the Internet. Pretty cool huh? I am scanning through 200+ US TV stations right now. I can see that downloading TV shows may be replaced for some by such a device.
The quality is good, probably similar to VCD quality or something but I imagine this can only improve as broadband speeds increase. Response to remote control actions are fast, and it’s also nice to be able to control the TV guide through the Slingbox (shown below).

I want one! Actually I want one in every country they are licensed in…

Interesting story today about author Gina Ford, who is a familiar name to many new parents! This is relevant to boards.ie’s recent legal threats, especially the oft-quoted Demon vs. Godfrey case…
Babycare expert Gina Ford is threatening to sue UK parenting site Mumsnet and its ISP after allegedly defamatory comments were posted about her on the site. The postings have been removed, but Ford’s lawyers are demanding that Mumsnet’s ISP take the whole site offline.
Ford is no stranger to controversy - it is fair to say she is loved and loathed in equal measure for her rigorous and disciplinarian approach to childcare. But she has now stirred up a debate over freedom of speech online not seen since the infamous case of Godfrey vs. Demon Internet.

Here’s a map showing where people are buying and selling items using adverts.ie, powered by Google Maps. To get locations for each county, I used John Handelaar’s town/city to geocode utility for Ireland and IShareMaps town/city to geocode utility for the UK (for Northern Ireland), along with the names of the county towns from Wikipedia.
