Today FM’s Ray D’Arcy Show (or rather Tuesday guest griper Ian O’Doherty) gave a passing mention to boards.ie two days ago and the usual tensions between those members who are from the capital and those who are not.
Why do we need to hear this old chestnut of “Dublin’s better” again? O’Doherty claims that everyone in Ireland outside Dublin really wants to live there because it’s so great. Sorry, it’s not. I was born in Dublin and lived there when I was a youngling, and even when I go back now I’m glad to go to Tower Records / HMV / Forbidden Planet / Starbucks and then get the hell out after a few hours. For me, it’s like going to the mall… Great for a bit, unbearable after that.

Some of us are actually angling to get out of Dublin…I wonder has Ian met any of us.
there are plenty of jobs in Dublin. It’s not impossible to move here if you really want to. On the other hand, it’s a little harder to move out of Dublin if you want to seeing as most of the jobs are in Dublin.
When I was 18, I couldn’t get out of Kilkenny fast enough. In the 1980’s it was not the happenin town it has become. I spent 17 years in Dublin between college and work and spent the last two of those trying to get the hell out. Work eventually casued me to move and we ended up in Bandon. I love every day I’m here and I’m never ever going back to a large city.
I pop up the odd time to visit friends and I just cannot believe people accept the dire quality of life there. I don’t totally buy the jobs excuse. I know of plenty of companies in Cork screaming for people. In fact one very high-tech one had to move from Clonakilty to Cork City just to get people to work for them. Hmm, Leixlip or Clonakilty, which would I choose?
But then I was in London yesterday and I realised Dublin is a doddle!
Dublin’s like America - great to visit, but don’t want to live there…
I live in Cork but occasionally travel up to Dublin for work purposes and I like going up, witmessing the hustle and bustle and realsing that Cork is calmer…
All of this Dublin’s not-so-great mallarkey is just a tactic to hoodwink us into a false sense of security.
It really is time to end this reckless experiment in multiculturalism and get real with the Culchie Control Platform http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T54TU8bsj8
Every place experiences the same issues. When I was young I couldn’t wait to get out of my home town. Now I’m old, I can’t afford to buy a house in my home town. Ahh .. such is life.
