New Version of WP SIOC Plugin from CaptSolo

Announcement from CaptSolo about a new version of his WordPress SIOC plugin:

New version of the WordPress SIOC plugin is available at: http://sw.deri.org/svn/uldis/2006/03/wp-sioc/wp-content/plugins/

This plugin exports SIOC metadata from the WordPress weblog engine. The SIOC vocabulary is defined in http://rdfs.org/sioc/

This is a fully functional development (beta testing) version. Please use it and report comments, suggestions and bugs to the mailing list. Once the feedback confirms it is OK, it will be put on the SIOC website.

How to Ping Planet Journals

I’m happy to say that our Planet Journals aggregator now pings successfully; previously when a ping was received the aggregator would begin immediately in the foreground and would thereby be delayed in sending a successful notification to proxies or blog platforms until aggregation was complete. Now the aggregation is performed in the background, and you’ll see the results almost instantly on planet.journals.ie. Thanks to Keith Gaughan for pointing out the problem, and to Martin Feeney for explaining the solution; it was then a simple matter of implementing it!

You can just add http://planet.journals.ie/xml-rpc.php to your list of ping servers in your blogging platform (e.g. in WordPress, it’s under Options > Writing > Update Services). Alternatively, if your blog system doesn’t support pinging (e.g. Blogger), you can use Keith Gaughan’s Irish Ping Proxy.

boards.ie is the 16th Most Visited Site in Ireland

(Via Damien Mulley » Blog Archive » Irishblogs.ie 92nd most visited site in Ireland…)

According to Alexa, boards.ie is now the 16th most visited site in Ireland, ahead of prominent sites such as RTÉ and Aer Lingus. Also it is interesting that the only “Irish” sites in the top 15 are Daft and Eircom (ignoring Ireland-branded versions of sites like eBay and Google); the rest are all internationals.

Mark Tighe Wins Oxygen.ie SMEDIA Award for Bebo Article

Was delighted to hear that Mark Tighe won an award for best Student Journalist of the Year (National Press) in the Oxygen.ie - SMEDIAS Shortlist Category B awards. Mark’s award was for his recent (much plagiarised!) article on Bebo. Congratulations Mark!

Fixed Slow Query in Planet Tags

Tagged browsing should actually work instantly now on the Planet Journals sites; there was a problem with a sub-query taking ages which I’ve replaced (e.g. here are the general tag views from the .co.nz and .ie sites). You can also see related tags for a particular tag on the right hand side.

boards.ie Launches Adverts Subsite at www.adverts.ie

Adverts - Main Index - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds

From today’s announcement:

Dear boards.ie members -

We are happy to announce the beta launch of our new classified adverts site:

www.adverts.ie

where users of our For Sale section can continue to post items for sale, but through a new interface focussed towards buying and selling items.

boards.ie has been very successful with its existing For Sale section, with nearly 45,000 items placed for sale, and with each item receiving an average of 7 replies regarding the sale.

As regards the existing For Sale section, all the categories have been replicated at the Adverts site, and boards.ie accounts will also work at www.adverts.ie. We envisage both services (new and old) running in parallel during this beta period, with a phasing out of the For Sale forums over the next few weeks; however a general Adverts forum will be opened for help, questions, etc. about the new service.

Please feel free to use this general Adverts forum (link below) to discuss the new service, and we hope this meets with your general approval.

Adverts Support

All the best,

The boards.ie Team

Planet.Journals.co.nz Replaces Generation Blog

Planet.Journals.co.nz, sister site to Planet.Journals.ie, is the new name for the Kiwi blogs aggregator Generation Blog. It is now running the latest version of the Planet PHP scripts. Update your links!

Edit: Here are some new buttons for both .ie and .co.nz.

boards.ie Circle of Friends II

Following on from my previous post, I’ve now made the circle of friends feature ignore any banned users, and it also relies on buddy links between users being mutual.

I think the total graph looks better now, and there are less connections between the outer smaller groups and the larger one in the centre, which seems to make more sense (spammers being removed means that less groups are connected).

Here’s another screenshot from the “all buddy links” view.

An tImeall ar an Raidió

An tImeall has become the first Irish independent podcast to be broadcast on licensed radio in the country. Conn, an alumni of NUI Galway, has agreed to broadcast An tImeall via Flirt FM, Galway’s college radio station. More details below (as Gaeilge!):

Cuirtear tús inniu le comhchraoladh ar an bpodchraoladh laethúil Gaeilge An tImeall, ar stáisiún raidio na mac léinn sa Ghaillimh, Flirt FM. Is é An tImeall an chéad phodchraoladh neamhspleách in Éirinn a chraolfar ar an raidio.
