Trying to pigeon hole forums and communities is a tricky business - everyone has a different opinion as to where such and such should go. With the latest reshuffle of forums at boards.ie, I’ve tried to go with the structure at dmoz.org (or my heart if that fails). So far, so good. Of course, people will miss what they are familiar with, but we do have more scope for future expansion I think.
As part of my new job at DERI, we’re hosting a workshop on FOAF (Friend of a Friend) and social networks. I was talking with Jon (Talliesin) about the meanings of friends and enemies, and he had a quote I had to add here (maybe you’ve heard it before, but it’s good nonetheless):
[18:33] [Talliesin] The Innuit language has a word that roughly translates as “to like, but not to the extent where you would go on a seal-hunting trip with”
[18:35] [Talliesin] If you spend cold winters in a small igloo with a bunch of people you develop precise terms for human relationships.

Wow. You guys do some pretty interesting stuff. I too have been doing some research into social networks and the semantic web, particularly ontologies. Feel free to check out our homepage at http://www.nomadireland.org although its undergoing some much-needed changes at the moment.
We’ll announce it to the compsoc membership.
