WWWBoard and UK Quake Archives
I’ve been programming for most of the afternoon, and am fairly happy with my first effort at Perl - when quake.ie’s WWWBoard hits every 100th message, the previous 100 messages will be kept, the rest archived, so no more blaming me for cutting threads etc. Also changed the American date format to European.
Added the UK Quake Mailing List Archives to quake.ie as well, messages are archived using the wonderful MHonArc utility.
North and South?
Hibernians may become one of those north/south bodies with an idea from Gibby that perhaps himself, Dusted, Shmern, and Slick may team up with us soon…
ftp.quake.ie Hits Limit!
Have just had to up the maximum number of ftp clients on quake.ie from 20 to 30 after finding myself unable to upload this plan - doh!
And here they are, my AUTOEXEC.CFG files for Quake/QuakeWorld and Quake 2! Read my Funky Names overview for details on how to include high ascii characters in your Quake name.

Goodbye Zero
Well, as you’ve all probably read by now, one of the original Irish Quakers is tossing aside his rocket-filled backpack and crossing the lava-pits to Tir na Noquake. Yes, I’m talking about none other than [nD]Zero, formerly with the Fianna, GI and Incarnate. Ronan decided to call it a day with this shock announcement on quake.ie’s WWWBoard:
Posted by Zero on April 11, 1998 at 07:38:01:
Hi Lads, just a note to say I’m leaving Quake. I have lots of work to do these times and to be honest I’m a bit sick of it all. I’ve been playin for a year and a half solid and I don’t get half as much enjoyment out of the game anymore really. This isnt one of those bullshiit statements either, I won’t be back, and I’m withdrawing from QL 98. Sorry to any nD lads for this, but its not all THAT sudden. I haven’t played one tenth the quake I used to, I have projects up to my ears, and plenty of people are practising like mad and getting ninja good and I don’t feel like getting the hole whooped off me just because I am too lazy to stay in shape.
I will keep doing the news and stuff until I find a replacement, although I have someone more or less lined up for it. You’ll probably see me around for the odd kickaround too but not that much, and I’ll keep organising nD’s games and tactics etc. I won’t give a big boring list of thanx to ppl from the last year and a half, coz I’d be here all night. They know who they are at any rate.
So, I’ll be seeing you around.
[nD]Zero, Zero’s News.
(Ex- GI, INC)
Needless to say we are all sorry to see you go Ronan, I still thought you might do a “Gay Byrne” as Greenbean put it but having talked to you last night I realize you are really leaving us
Here’s the last Quake interview where Zero talks to QameX. It was nice having you in both Guns Islanders and the quake.ie team, and we’ll be seeing you again soon no doubt. As they say in UL, g’luck!
Zero Archives, Replacement?
Missing your weekly dose of Zero? Catch up on what he’s said in the past in the Zero archives! As for who is going to take over from Zero, we are currently in negotiations with a suitable replacement so more on that shortly.
quake.ie Servers
Have had a number of requests for the latest list of quake.ie servers so here we go
QuakeWorld: ffa1, ctf1, war1, duel1, duel2, ra1, and ca1.quake.ie
Quake 2: q2ffa1, q2ctf1, q2war1, q2duel1, and ra1.quake.ie
I hope to change the arena server IPs to arena1/q2arena1 and arena2/q2arena2 shortly.
IQCL Nearly There
Some of the last IQCL games were played this weekend, I think Trinity are still missing in action and failed to show up for their latest games so more unhappy faces have been seen in the Incarnate camp (did I say camp and Incarnate in the same sentence, no insult intended folks :-).
All of Saturday’s games were walkovers, with Wu Tang and Alchemy failing to show at all. The nD vs. VtX game was declared a walkover when VtX admitted they would be unable to produce a team to match nD’s abilities! Today’s two actual results were Abat (148) vs. Phx (31), Darragh was shouting allegations of ping bombing during the game but it turned out to be their café that was causing the problem, and X-Com (85) vs. CS (45).
Cloud’s IQCL Predictions
Nothing personal here folks, this is just who I think is going to win.

Quake 2 Rocket Arena
I’ve added a Quake 2 Rocket Arena server at ra1.quake.ie. You can download the client patch here, quake.ie’s mirror of ra2211.exe. It’s pretty cool the way you can have multiple games going on in the separate arena areas on each level, seems to have taken off big time (Rocket Arena Home Page).
10 games left in the IQCL and here’s the situation so far.

IGN Meeting
Update time! I was in Dublin yesterday for assorted meetings with IGN and Tinet staff, pretty happy with the way they went and I can see big things happening after the summer.
Without giving too much away, IGN now comprises of a number of sections including quake.ie, gamer.ie, kali.ie and the forthcoming gamescon.ie - each section is then represented by their head on the IGN council.
Did you spot a guy in GI uniform wandering the streets of the capital city yesterday? I was expecting to encounter some of the CT, II or Ebola patrol groups, but as you can see from this photo I met no resistance along the way.
Mystery Guest Identified
At long last I have solved the mystery of the other UCG Quake player we came upon once. Apart from Mouserat and myself, there are no other Quake 1 players in UCG anymore. Dinky was revealed today as being none other than CD_EarthwormJim, and I managed to dig up an image from my archives showing one of his first forays onto our server.
PureDM on quake.ie Q2
If you’re a Quake 2 fan you will have noticed we have added a new voting mod to our quake.ie servers, q2ffa1, q2war1 and duel1. Once 51% of the players on the server type “vote q2dm3″, the mod automatically changes to that level. The mod also features an enhanced weapons display hud, and incorporates the popular ServObits (customised death messages) and VWep (visible weapons) features. For more details, check out the homepage for this mod, PureDM.
The launch party for Rocket Arena 2 (Quake 2) is on tomorrow night, being held live on IRC I think. If this mod is as good as it sounds, we may run one on q2arena1.quake.ie shortly. Yes, my quake.ie servers plan has changed yet again - the vanilla Quake 1 servers just aren’t being used so I propose to remove these and replace them with permanent Quake 2 servers - then we would have ffa1, ctf1, war1, duel1, duel2, arena1, arena2, q2ffa1, q2ctf1, q2war1, q2duel1 and q2arena1.quake.ie.
Happy birthday to me! Updated my configs page with new keys for those using the FAQ proxy.
