Quake Screenshots

I have taken over 450 screenshots to date (what?!), that works out at just under one a day since I started playing in 1996 I think, here’s a few of my favourite tales of fragginess to go with them. First off, some free for alls.

Prehistoric. Me beats Poor_Monkey in a free for all! For more information on this great Quake player, visit my Poor_Monkey Respect Page.

10 April, 1997. The WeedKiller clan were a fun bunch of people, where are they now I ask?! Bongzilla and crew entertained me one night on e2m7 - I think - one of their members used to be in DC too, MrBlobby was his name. And there’s one of the first Irish Quake players, Aqualung, haven’t seen him in a while…

18 April, 1997. Ah, the Special Patrol Group, still on the go and one of the first clans we came across on our travels across the water to the zeta and chaos Quake servers in the UK. Those were the times, and that was the place to be. Pings of 40, heaven!

And here’s some memorable duels. I am positive there are about five times as many screenshots out there of me losing duels as opposed to winning, but anyway why should that stop me posting my faves!

15 April, 1997. Ah, the good old days! Back when Spud-BB and I used to play with keys, and spend hours on end happily duelling on dm4, and us not looking up or down or using any of that new-fangled field of view stuff. This particular duel (demo on the GI page) did not go so well for Spud, now he could easily produce a screenshot of him doing a much worse job on me, but anyway here’s mine. I think the score was 20 to 1 in this game when Spud decided to do a lava dive, he gave up after losing his frag. Spud has vastly improved since then, beating Sujoy on dm4 last week.

26 May, 1997. Back in early 1997, when a QuakeLord player joined into your game, it was more or less a foregone conclusion that he would win the free for all no matter how late he joined in (it seemed to be a QL code of practice for their players to _only_ join into games they thought they could win). QL-LordStorm was the most feared QL player of them all, sporting the title of top UK player for a number of months until DC-Sujoy came to fame. Here’s a screenshot of the great LordStorm beating me on dm2, I remember being down in the minus frags department in this game and fragging LS with my trusty RL to which he replied “Nice!”, and a blinding light shone down from heaven and all was revealed to me, I would become a frag god in the image of the great LordStorm. It hasn’t happened yet but some day I know it will…

16 June, 1997. Here’s another of those QL chaps, Ricardo, in a closer match on dm4. I think I might still have been in keys mode around this time, not having made the mouse transition just yet. See those dashes under the rankings headings, that’s what the old version of QuakeWorld used to look like and all I can say is thanks be to Shub-Niggurath that they got rid of the old ranking system in QW, I hated it!! All players had a user number and data on their efficiency, frags, deaths was stored on the central QW master server. I had a minus ranking for the longest time, and no brown GI initials :-(

19 September, 1997. Here’s one of me beating Pio to pulpo on dm4, with an average 3.3 frags per minute. This must have been played on Guns Island QW since GI-MerIDiaN is spectating there, but I can’t remember that much about it. Looks like it was a massacre anyway.

27 October, 1997. Can you spot the subtle difference between this shot and the last one? Yes, a bright new red crosshair courtesy of the Newbie Targetting System Pro from the QuakeMarines. The chaps at Id Software soon saw fit to build this into QuakeWorld 2.10 as “crosshair 2″, but for the moment this patch provided us with a much more accurate cursor for aiming. Here’s one of those SAS guys, saw a demo of them being destroyed by QPD in one of the UK leagues, but back then they were pretty hot, I think the SAS_TA were a trainee division so I showed this guy (AKA The Mad Moose, he has a duel server now) how it was done :-P Nice ping!

13 December, 1997. I can’t remember exactly when I started using “fov 110″ but looks like it was around now. This is one of my more successful duels with nD-Zero, he taught me how to lava pop a guy coming out from the bottom teleporter and looks like I showed him how good I was at it here. We played a number of class games on our wonderful LAN connection, getting pings of 30 or less from here to UL and vice versa.

1 February, 1998. Regi from Clan Trinity is one of those up and coming players I can see doing great things in the future. In the past few months, he has been playing consistently better and better, and has formed the second division of Clan Trinity (Clan II) to play in the IQCL. One to watch.

9 March, 1998. And the redoubtable Mr. Woodlock, AKA Spice-Scary, Amos, etc. I think this game came after he whopped me a bit on dm6, so I was happy to get this particular win and by such a huge margin too.

Cloud Shots

Added some shots to boost my flagging ego a bit :-) Note, there are over 800k of images on this page.

GI Latest

Guns Islanders private section goes public, username and password are guest.

Updated the GI news page with details of 4K_Ser’s invasion of Guns Island last night.

Added “Poohmeister’s Guide to Winning” to the advice section.

Some General Quake Tips

  • Don’t run with a scissors. Turn off the “Tips of the Day” in MS Word.
  • Use “pushlatency -150″ if your ping is over 150 in QuakeWorld.
  • Use “crosshair 2″ in QuakeWorld or get the Newbie Targetting System Pro for Quake from the Quake Marines home page. Taking this a step further, open your c:\quake\qw\skins\base.pcx up in Paint Shop Pro and paint a big red square on the guy’s chest - makes targetting that little bit easier (who, me, cheat?!). If you really want to cheat, extract the wizard.mdl from your id1pak0.pak and save it as eyes.mdl in id1pak2.pak using QuArK or something similar (picked this one up from the boyz in UL). I don’t use this “protection against invisibility” myself.
  • Try turning up both fov and sensitivity as high as you can comfortably. I have “fov 110″ and “sensitivity 20″, Trinity use “fov 130″ which feels like flying.
  • Bind common messages to keys - don’t waste time typing them in and dying (e.g. bind f4 “say gurgle”).
  • Type “noskins 1″ if you don’t want to dl or see all those crappy skins in QuakeWorld. Type “noskins 2″ if you want to see the skins you already have, but don’t want to dl any more new ones.
  • Try and use QView to connect to Quake/QuakeWorld/Quake 2 servers, not GameSpy - it’s free, and once you get the hang of it, pretty cool too.
  • Tired of waiting through those boring Quake demos? Stick this in your config and press f9 to fly through them.

  • alias +fastforward "host_framerate 0.8; echo Fast forwarding..."
    alias -fastforward "host_framerate 0.0"
    bind f9 +fastforward

GI Tactics

Phew, busy times here again in Guns Island! Just updated the GI strategies section (private), so should be easier for us to share our tactics amongst ourselves and maybe with the public if the EWJ / Mouserat idea of posting tactics on the quake.ie site somewhere goes ahead.

Quake 2

VisHnU added q2war1.quake.ie to our DNS, so we are all go for any forthcoming Quake 2 clan games. I have uploaded the Quake 2 3.14 demo to ftp.quake.ie, and full 3.14 point releases with and without CTF. The previous 64 player Quake 2 DM maps on ftp.quake.ie were in Windows executable format, now we have the versions for Unix there too. Alan, prompt as ever, has put new links to these four files in quake.ie’s Quake 2 miscellaneous files section.

Visitors

4K_Ser is coming to visit and duel with GIs Cloud and Mouse tonight, it should be fun, I read about how he laid waste all around him at the UL Quake meeting last weekend. Tomorrow evening, Eddie Rocket of IGN fame is paying us a visit, and then we’ll have some practice methinks for our IQCL game on Sunday. On Saturday afternoon, we are being invaded by Clan Destine chaps EWJ, Chaos and others again. Saturday evening, GI are playing in the Frag Around the World tour by Clan Braindead (please vacate war1.quake.ie, ourselves and X-Com will be playing there). And finally on Sunday, we have our IQCL game against X-Com on Andromeda 9 (where?!).

IGN Committee

As you may have already read on QameX, the IGN had a committee meeting in Dublin on Friday evening where Mindphuck, Carnate, VisHnU and myself got together and discussed the up and coming Gamescon this summer - no details available to the public yet but as Eric said it’s going to be BIG! We are hosting some new sites at quake.ie, including Kobra and Omar’s UL Quake Masters and also the original Fear of a Tangled Web (FOATW) by Musician. Kobra has just uploaded the latest screenshots and demos from the ULQM here, you will need the death32a.bsp file to view these.

Cloudlands Updated

Updated most of my sections including Advice, Logos, and Skins. Also uploaded the Q2 versions of dm4 and dm6 to ftp.quake.ie, they are in the pub/files/q2levels directory. Mouserat has updated the IQCL results page.

Frag Around the World

Alan from X-Com told me about the Clan Braindead “Frag Around the World” dm6 tour that’s coming up this Saturday, so I have entered Guns Islanders for it and we will see whether or not we get to play this clan in their 12 hour stint travelling from server to server, from Japan to the USA.

Goodbye tf1, Hello duel2

As soon as I get the DNS entries sorted, we will run a duel2 QuakeWorld server to replace the flagging Team Fortress server at tf1.quake.ie. At the same time, we will launch our q2war1.quake.ie server, which I hope will provide a much needed boost to Q2 clan play in Ireland. Guns Islanders will be one of the first clans to have a war on this server, so maybe some more of you Quake 1 clans can give the latest Q2 dm levels a go and see what you make of the point release modifications.

DM Classics

For Quake 2 players who miss their old Quake 1 dm levels, I’d recommend you go to the Deathmatch Classics site at planetquake.com/dmclassics/, they had a big vote there lately on the best conversions, and funnily enough the two maps I thought were the best versions of dm4 and dm6 by DaTa.SwS were picked! Both use the original textures and have a great Quake 1 feel. Well then why bother playing them in Quake 2 I hear you ask - aha! Because you get those coloured lighting effects with Quake 2 and although it hasn’t really taken off in Ireland yet (Deo Gratias), Quake 2 is eating up the rest of the world’s old QW servers. Anyway, they have released a pak containing Quake 2 versions of all 6 dm levels, as well as some more favourites including dm7 and Hipnotic’s dm1 I think. Here’s some shots of what they look like, q1dm4 and q1dm6.

Mouserat Level Beta

Mouserat has released the beta version of his dm level and is looking for your feedback! Hopefully if enough people try it out and like the level, the IQOOL committee may even consider using it in their up and coming league.

Mouse and Cloud’s Levels for Quake

Here’s a sneak preview of Mouserat’s and my forthcoming One on One deathmatch levels for Quake. Dermot’s level is looking and playing pretty well so should be done shortly (although at the rate he is painting it I could be wrong :-P). I have designed my first level in the shape of Cloud-Warrior’s logo, as you may be able to make out from the shots below, will have a large “rocket arena” type room in the middle with weapons on either side and underneath…

Cloudlands Moves

I’ve moved! Please replace the old links http://weber.ucg.ie/quake/cloud-warrior.html and http://weber.ucg.ie/cgi-bin/finger.cgi?cloud@quake.ucg.ie with http://www.quake.ie/cloudlands/.

As you can see, I’ve ripped off the GI home page layout yet again…
